We keep clear-finished and oiled timber as timber rather than painting over it, respect the original distinction between painted and unpainted surfaces, and test any new scheme against the architecture before committing. If a colour would fight the building, we say so at the walk-through.
Salt-laden air is the main difference. Airborne salt settles on paint film and interferes with adhesion, so exterior surfaces are washed down before any sanding, failed coatings are cut back further than they would be inland, and bare timber and metal are primed the same day they are exposed. We also specify exterior systems for coastal exposure rather than defaulting to one product, particularly on elevations facing the bay.
More than a wash and a topcoat. On Beaumaris's timber homes we check for movement at joints and fixings, rake out and re-seal failed gaps, sand glossy or chalked film back to a sound key, spot-prime bare timber promptly and replace putty and seals around the large window walls where they have perished.
