What Exterior Painting Includes

Exterior House Painting Melbourne for Heritage & Contemporary Homes

Our exterior painting covers the full envelope of a home — weatherboard and cladding, rendered walls, brick and masonry, timber windows, trims, fascias and eaves, doors and feature elements, through to alfresco zones, pool surrounds and outdoor structures. We work across heritage exteriors, contemporary homes and architect-designed facades, matching the coating system to the substrate and the exposure it faces.

North and west elevations are specified for stronger UV exposure; timber sills, fascias and end-grain are sealed before finish coats. The result is an exterior that stays even across every elevation, crisp where surface meets surface, and holds through Melbourne’s seasons.

Our Exterior Painting Process

Our Preparation-Led
Exterior Painting Process

An exterior finish is decided long before the topcoat. The work moves through a deliberate sequence — each stage given its full time, on every project, without exception. You will have a single point of contact from consultation through to completion, with clear updates at each stage of the project.

Begin Your Consultation
Surface preparation & protection

Gardens, paving and glazing covered and protected. Surfaces pressure-cleaned, scraped and sanded back to a sound edge before any coat is applied.

01
Consultation & Brief

A senior Mousi team member visits, assesses every elevation and substrate and discusses the brief in full. Colour consultation is included. A fully itemised written proposal follows.

02
Substrate Assessment

Every elevation is read for failing paint, moisture, timber rot, render cracking and chalking — the failures that decide a coating’s life. The scope of correction is set before any work begins.

03
Protection & Set-up

Garden beds, paving, paths, glazing and fixtures masked and covered; access and containment set up. Completed in full before preparation begins — the property is protected from the first moment.

04
Preparation & Priming

Surfaces washed of dirt, salt and chalking; failing paint scraped and sanded to a sound edge; timber repaired, gaps caulked and the correct primer applied to each substrate — the work most often skipped.

05
Finish Application

A coating system matched to each substrate and exposure, applied by the method the surface calls for — brushed, rolled or sprayed — for an even, protective finish across every elevation. Projects are managed by Mousi with trusted specialist support where required, while maintaining clear preparation standards and finish quality.

06
Final Review & Property Passport™

A final walkthrough of every elevation. On completion, a Property Passport™ records every substrate, system and colour applied, so future touch-ups are matched precisely. Protection removed, access cleared, the property left clean.

Repairing Exterior Surfaces

Common exterior defects
& surface remediation.

Before any topcoat goes on, the underlying defects have to be identified and corrected. A coat of paint over a compromised surface hides the problem briefly and then fails with it. We assess every elevation for the issues below and remediate the cause before any coating is considered — so the result is sound, not just newly painted.

Peeling & Blistering

Coatings lifting or bubbling from the surface through UV age, moisture beneath or earlier coats over poor preparation. We remove all unsound material back to a sound edge, address the moisture or adhesion cause, then prime and rebuild the system so the new finish sits flat and holds.

Timber Rot & Decay

Soft, split or rotted timber in sills, frames, fascias, eaves and door joinery — the first elements to fail on a Melbourne home. We cut out and treat the rot, rebuild with the appropriate filler or replace beyond-repair sections, then prime bare timber before finishing.

Render & Masonry Cracking

Hairline and structural cracking, render delamination and drummy sections in rendered and masonry walls. We cut out and patch cracks, stabilise friable areas with the correct primer, and specify a flexible, breathable system that bridges movement rather than splitting over it.

Mould, Moss & Algae

Green and black growth on shaded and south-facing elevations, eaves and damp surfaces. We clean and treat the affected areas, address the moisture and drainage conditions feeding the growth, and finish with resistant systems where appropriate so it does not return with the next wet season.

Rising Damp & Efflorescence

Salt deposits, staining and paint failure low on masonry walls where moisture moves through the substrate. We identify the source, allow the wall to dry, remove efflorescence and stabilise the surface, and ensure the substrate is sound and dry before any coating — treating the cause, not the symptom.

Chalking & UV Breakdown

Powdery, faded surfaces where UV has broken down the previous coating, and general weathering and failed earlier workmanship. We wash, stabilise and prime the chalked surface to a sound, uniform base — the sound base the coating system bonds to.

Specification & standards.

The decisions made before the final coat — the systems, sheens and preparation specified for your home. Primers, sealers, undercoats and finish coats are specified according to substrate condition, exposure, sheen level and manufacturer requirements.

Coating Systems

Primer, undercoat and finish coats specified for each substrate — flexible membrane and acrylic systems to render and masonry, breathable systems to timber cladding, and durable exterior enamels to windows, trims and doors.

Sheen Selection

Low sheen suits broad render, masonry and weatherboard surfaces; semi-gloss and gloss enamel shed water and take the weather on windows, doors, fascia, gutters and trim. We specify each sheen to the surface and its exposure, not by default.

Exposure-Matched Specification

North and west elevations and coastal frontages weather faster, so they are specified more robustly than sheltered sides — UV-stable, flexible systems with end-grain, junctions and entry points sealed against water.

Heritage Exteriors

Federation, Victorian and Edwardian weatherboard, render and timber detail — finished with breathable, heritage-appropriate systems and gentle preparation, with lead paint on pre-1970 homes identified and managed first.

Preparation Standards

A fixed sequence: protect, assess every elevation, wash, scrape and sand to a sound edge, repair timber and render, caulk and prime the correct system, then finish. The steps most often skipped — thorough washing and back-to-sound preparation — we never skip.

Older Homes & Hazardous Materials

Some older Melbourne homes may contain lead-based coatings or asbestos-containing materials. Where these materials are suspected, appropriate testing and specialist assessment may be recommended before preparation or painting works commence. Safety, compliance and long-term performance remain the priority throughout the project.

A restored brick and render heritage bungalow at dusk with charcoal trim, red brick, gabled roof and lit windows, painted by Mousi in Melbourne
Weatherboard, Render & Masonry

Each substrate asks for
a different system.

Weatherboard, render and masonry each fail differently and each asks for a different coating build. Timber moves and needs a flexible, breathable system over sound primer; render needs a coating that manages moisture and bridges hairline movement; brick and masonry need their chalking and efflorescence stabilised before any topcoat. We specify to the substrate rather than defaulting to one product across the whole house.

Each elevation is washed, repaired and primed to the correct system, then finished for the exposure it faces — north and west walls and coastal frontages specified more robustly than sheltered sides. The aim is a finish that weathers evenly across the whole home rather than failing first where the sun and rain hit hardest.

Before
UV, Moisture & Weather Exposure

A coating is only as good
as the surface beneath.

Peeling, blistering and chalking are symptoms of UV breakdown, moisture and poor adhesion — not the paint itself. We remove all unsound material back to a stable edge, identify and address the moisture or adhesion source, then prime and rebuild the system correctly. Coating over the symptom is what leaves a facade failing again within a season or two.

Melbourne’s UV, temperature swings and driving rain test every junction and end-grain. On exposed and coastal elevations we specify more robust, UV-stable systems and seal the points where water enters, so the protection is matched to the exposure rather than applied uniformly and left to fail unevenly.

Timber Windows, Trims & Doors

Timber fails first — so
it’s prepared first.

Windows, sills, frames, fascias, eaves and doors are the first elements to fail on a Melbourne home — the timber that takes the most sun and water. We cut out and treat rot, rebuild or replace where needed, prime bare timber, then finish in durable exterior enamel for a hard, weather-resistant result.

Previously painted timber is prepared with care: failed coatings scraped and sanded back, the substrate repaired and primed, end-grain sealed, and the profile cut in by hand so the line where trim meets cladding stays crisp and deliberate.

Exterior Preparation in Practice

What preparation
actually looks like
on site.

The sequence is explained above. This is what it looks like on the building — the washing, scraping, repair and priming that decides the finish long before the topcoat.

None of it is visible once we leave. All of it is the reason the finish lasts.

Selected Project · Toorak

Toorak Residence.

Location. Toorak, Melbourne.

Property type. A large contemporary two-storey residence — rendered masonry, expansive glazing, black timber-batten screening and a pool courtyard, with a full interior scheme alongside the exterior.

Scope. Complete exterior and interior repaint — render to all elevations, soffits, fascias, the black vertical batten screens and street fence, plus the full interior: walls, ceilings, doors and trims.

Preparation challenges. Large unbroken render faces show every imperfection in raking light, so each elevation was washed, filled, sanded and spot-primed to a flat, continuous surface before coating. Crisp separation between the white render and the black batten work demanded careful masking and cutting throughout.

Coating system. Premium render system — Dulux AcraTex high-build membrane to the rendered elevations, a thick, flexible elastomeric coating many times the film build of standard paint, engineered to bridge and span hairline render cracks, stretch with movement and hold colour through Melbourne’s seasons. Dulux Weathershield to the fence and the black battened facade; the aluminium windows primed with Dulux Precision Maximum Adhesion Primer and finished in Dulux Metal Shield; and the timber entry in an oil-based varnish. Every element was built as one primer and two finish coats. Interiors finished in Dulux Wash&Wear low-sheen to walls with enamel to doors and trims.

Finish selection. A clean architectural white across the render, judged on the elevations in daylight, set against a deep charcoal-black on the timber battens and fence for contrast and definition.

Duration. Approximately four months across exterior and interior, staged so each elevation and internal zone was completed to finish before moving on.

Outcome. A crisp, gallery-clean exterior and a seamless interior that read as one considered scheme — even across every face and protected against the weather it faces.

Alfresco & Outdoor Living

Outdoor rooms, finished
to the same standard.

Alfresco zones, pool surrounds, battened screens, decks and outdoor structures are exposed to more than any other part of a home — full sun, splashing, chlorine and constant weather. We coat them as deliberately as a facade: cleaned, prepared and sprayed or brushed in systems chosen to take that exposure and hold their colour.

Whether it’s a charcoal screen wall framing a pool, crisp white cladding around an outdoor shower and kitchen, or timber and metal detailing, the finish is even, durable and built for the way an outdoor room is actually lived in.

Colour & Finish Selection for Melbourne Exteriors

The colour is chosen once.
The finish is weathered
every day.

A colour consultation is included with every accepted project. We assess orientation, exposure, roof and fixed materials, and the streetscape and any heritage context before any recommendation — and sample on the actual elevation, in daylight, so the colour is judged on the house rather than on a chip.

Colour sets the character of the home; the finish decides how it endures. Sheen and system govern how the surface sheds water, resists UV fade, and wears in the years after we leave. We specify both together, and document them in your Property Passport™ so future work matches precisely.

Exterior paint finish comparison on weatherboard, render and timber, showing how different substrates take an exterior house painting system, by Mousi in Melbourne

Coating systems, not just colours

A colour is only the surface of the decision. We specify a complete exterior coating system — primer, sealer, undercoat and finish coats — chosen for the substrate, its condition and the exposure it faces, then matched to colour depth, sheen and the preparation the surface requires. The system is selected to the house and its weather load, drawing on the right product from trusted manufacturers — among them Dulux, Haymes, Wattyl, Sherwin-Williams, Resene, Porter’s, Sikkens and Intergrain — in line with manufacturer recommendations and with long-term maintenance in mind, rather than defaulting to a single brand.

Exterior paint sample pots and white finish drawdowns used for exterior house painting colour selection in Melbourne, by Mousi

Sampled on the house, not the card

Exterior colour reads nothing like a small swatch. The same colour shifts with orientation, sunlight and shade across the day, and against the materials around it. We brush sample pots onto the actual elevations and assess them in daylight before anything is confirmed — reading each colour against orientation, sun and shade, the roof, brick and masonry, render texture, the existing windows and trims, paving and landscape, neighbouring homes, and any heritage or architectural context.

Two-tone and three-tone schemes

Most homes resolve best as a considered scheme rather than a single colour. A two-tone scheme pairs a main body colour with the trim, fascia, windows and doors in a complementary or contrasting tone. A three-tone scheme adds an accent — doors, windows, gutters, garage, fencing or a feature element — for depth and definition. We help choose the combination that suits the architecture rather than applying one colour across the whole house.

Coordinated with what stays. Exterior colour has to live with the elements that aren’t being painted — roof tiles, brickwork, stone, paving, aluminium windows, fences and the garden tones around the home. We select the scheme to sit with these fixed materials, so the finished result reads as one resolved exterior rather than a colour applied in isolation.

While colour sets the character of the home, sheen determines how each surface sheds water, reflects light, shows defects and wears over time. Exterior sheen is selected by surface, exposure, durability, cleanability and architectural appearance — not by preference alone.

The same exterior colour brushed across sheen levels on weatherboard — the colour reads the same, while the way each band sheds water and holds light changes with the sheen.

On exteriors, sheen is specified by surface. Broad walls and weatherboards are commonly finished in low sheen, while windows, doors, fascia, gutters and detailed trim often use semi-gloss or gloss enamel systems for durability and definition.

Flat

A very soft, non-reflective finish for sheltered exterior ceilings, soffits and low-touch areas. Not usually used on exposed exterior walls.

Across Melbourne

Exterior painting for
Melbourne’s established homes.

Mousi paints the exteriors of architect-designed homes, heritage residences and considered family houses across Melbourne — among them Toorak, Brighton, South Yarra, Hawthorn, Kew, Camberwell, Malvern and Balwyn. In each, the brief is the same: substrates prepared properly, systems matched to the exposure, and a finish recorded so it can be matched and maintained for the life of the home.

A restored period home exterior in cream weatherboard and render with dark trim and red-tile roof, finished by Mousi in Melbourne
Heritage Exteriors

Period homes restored
with period-correct care.

Federation, Victorian and Edwardian exteriors are restored sympathetically — gentle preparation that protects original timber and detailing, lead-paint precautions on pre-1970 homes, and breathable systems suited to older substrates. The finish protects the building’s fabric rather than trapping moisture against it.

Colour and sheen are chosen appropriately to the era, with heritage-overlay requirements respected where they apply. Heritage painting is also offered as a dedicated service for period homes requiring specialist restoration.

How We Compare

Where the difference is
built in.

The difference between a properly prepared exterior and a standard repaint is rarely visible on the first day. It shows in the preparation beneath, the system specified, and how the finish holds through the seasons after. Our aim is not simply to apply more paint. It is to reduce the likelihood of premature coating failure by addressing the condition of the surface before the finish coat is applied.

Who We Work With

Working with architects,
designers & homeowners.

Mousi works as a premium finish contractor and coatings specialist rather than a volume painter. For architects and designers, that means a finish partner who reads a specification, protects a detail and delivers the surface a considered project depends on — working to nominated palettes, systems and standards without compromise.

For homeowners, it means a single point of accountability from consultation to final walkthrough, colour judged on the house rather than on a chip, and a finish recorded so it can be maintained for the life of the home. The brief is always the same: substrates prepared properly, systems specified deliberately, and an exterior that holds its finish through the seasons.

Common Questions

Exterior painting
answered directly.

Everything you need to know before your first exterior consultation. If your question isn’t here, we’re happy to discuss it directly.

Begin Your Consultation

A correctly prepared and specified exterior repaint typically holds its finish for many years, but the honest answer is that longevity is decided at the preparation stage, not by the paint tin. Melbourne’s UV, temperature swings and driving rain punish any surface that was coated over failing paint, damp timber or unstable render. We assess the substrate first, correct what has failed, prime to the conditions, then apply a coating system matched to the exposure — that is what determines whether a finish lasts or peels.

Exterior coatings almost never fail because of the paint — they fail because of what was underneath it. Chalked render, glossy un-sanded timber, moisture in the substrate or loose existing paint all break the bond between the new coating and the surface. No premium product can hold to a compromised surface. Our process is preparation-led for exactly this reason: wash, scrape, sand, repair, fill and prime are where the durability is built.

Weatherboard is assessed board by board. We pressure-clean to remove dirt, salt and chalking, scrape and sand back failing and glossy paint to a sound edge, treat or replace any rotted or split boards, re-nail and caulk where movement has opened joints, spot-prime bare timber and fill before a full prime coat. Federation and Victorian weatherboard in particular needs patient hand-preparation — it is the single biggest factor in whether the repaint looks crisp and lasts.

Yes. Render and masonry need a different approach to timber. We check for chalking, hairline and structural cracking, render delamination and moisture or efflorescence before any coating goes on. Cracks are cut out and patched, friable surfaces stabilised with the correct primer, and we specify a breathable, flexible masonry coating system so the wall can manage moisture rather than trap it.

These are symptoms, not the problem — so we diagnose the cause before recoating. Peeling and blistering usually point to moisture, poor adhesion or earlier coats applied over inadequate preparation; chalking is UV breakdown of the previous coating. We remove all unsound material back to a stable edge, address the moisture or adhesion source, then prime and rebuild the system correctly.

Yes — timber repair is part of exterior preparation, not an add-on we skip. Window sills, frames, fascias, eaves and door joinery are the first elements to fail on a Melbourne home. We cut out rot, treat the timber, rebuild with the appropriate filler or replace the section where it is beyond repair, then prime bare timber before finishing.

Heritage exteriors demand period-correct preparation and systems, not just a colour. We work sympathetically with Federation, Victorian and Edwardian weatherboard and render — gentle preparation that protects original timber and detailing, lead-paint precautions on pre-1970 homes, breathable systems suited to older substrates, and colour and sheen choices appropriate to the era.

Moisture is the root cause of most exterior coating failure, so we treat it as a substrate issue before it becomes a paint issue. We identify the source — rising damp, failed flashing, blocked weep holes, poor drainage or unprotected end-grain timber — and ensure the surface is sound and dry before coating. Where the substrate itself has failed, it is repaired or replaced.

Yes. Bayside and coastal-exposed homes face salt, wind-driven rain and harsher UV, and the north and west elevations of any Melbourne home weather faster than the rest. We specify more robust, UV-stable and flexible coating systems on exposed elevations and pay particular attention to sealing end-grain, junctions and any point where water can enter.

We specify the system to the substrate and exposure rather than defaulting to one product. Timber, render and masonry each take a different primer and topcoat build, and exposed elevations are specified more robustly than sheltered ones. Sheen is chosen for both appearance and performance, and the full specification is documented in your proposal.

Exterior painting is weather-dependent and we plan around it honestly. Coatings need appropriate temperature and dry surfaces to cure correctly, so we schedule around Melbourne’s conditions and will pause rather than apply a coat in unsuitable weather. We keep you informed of any weather-driven scheduling and prioritise getting the system right over hitting an artificial deadline.

Exterior work is managed to protect the whole property. Garden beds, paving, paths, glazing and fixtures are masked and covered, drop sheets and containment are used during preparation and spraying, and the site is left clean and orderly at the end of each day. Washing run-off and preparation dust are controlled throughout.

Yes — alfresco and outdoor living is a core part of our exterior work. Battened screen walls, pool surrounds, decks, outdoor showers, kitchens and cladding are coated with systems chosen for full sun, splashing and chlorine exposure, sprayed or brushed for an even finish that holds its colour. These zones take more weather than almost any surface on the property, so they are prepared and specified accordingly.

Qualifying exterior projects include Property Passport™ documentation — a record of the substrates, preparation, coating systems and colours applied, so you have a clear specification of exactly what protects your home and where. Mousi Care™ is available for eligible projects: guidance on maintaining the finish and support if anything needs attention.
